Your Circle Be Keeping You Stuck? Here’s How to Break Free

Jul 07, 2025

We often hear that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. But what happens when that circle, those familiar voices, those closest to us—are the very ones keeping us from growth?

It's a tough realization, but a necessary one. Negative people are often drawn to each other because they find comfort in shared limitations. Proverbs 17:4 tells us, “The wicked enjoy fellowship with others who are wicked; liars enjoy liars.” This isn’t just about morality—it’s about mindset. People who don't want to change naturally surround themselves with others who reinforce their status quo.

So what happens when you decide to rise? When you dream bigger, dress sharper, or set ambitious goals? Often, the people in your circle don’t celebrate—it unsettles them. It’s not your idea they’re resisting; it’s what your growth says about their stagnation. Your progress becomes a mirror, reflecting the effort they haven’t made.

It’s not that they’re bad people. They're just uncomfortable with your elevation. And that's okay. You can love them, but love them from a distance.

Here’s how to know it’s time to change your circle:

  • Your wins are met with skepticism or indifference.
  • You feel the need to dim your light to fit in.
  • Their energy drains you or fills you with doubt.

The truth? Growth is uncomfortable. You won’t grow if you keep shrinking to make others feel secure.

So how do you shift?

Start by asking, “God, show me the people who will stretch me, who will sharpen me, who will push me toward the best version of myself.” Then, pay attention. God leaves breadcrumbs—new connections, mentors, communities that align with your purpose.

This doesn’t mean you’re better than those you're leaving behind. You’re just on a different journey now. And one day, your transformation might be the light they need to start their own.

So love boldly, grow intentionally, and choose circles that stretch you—not ones that silence
