Why Self-Help Isn’t Helping: The Soul Truth You’re Missing

Jul 21, 2025

We live in a world saturated with advice. Scroll through Instagram or turn on your favorite podcast, and you’ll hear it: wake up earlier, journal more, say your affirmations, drink a smoothie, high five yourself in the mirror. Do these things, and supposedly, you’ll be transformed.

But let’s get real — if self-help actually worked, why are so many of us still stuck?

Jen Smith, host of Truth Behind the Trend, doesn’t just question the self-help movement — she exposes the spiritual hole at the center of it. In her words: “Science can explain the brain. It cannot heal the soul.” That’s why despite all the routines, affirmations, and productivity hacks, the world is still exhausted and empty.

Self-help has become a form of spiritual sedation. It offers surface-level comfort but never addresses the core of our longing: the need for God. The scariest part? Much of the advice sounds almost right. It’s empowering. It’s polished. But it’s missing the only thing that brings true peace — the Creator.

Jen points to content from thought leaders like Mel Robbins — smart, insightful, and well-intentioned. But even the best advice, if God is removed from it, becomes a dead end. You can’t rewire your brain into healing your soul. You can’t self-love your way into a peace that only comes from divine connection.

We’re not just tired — we’re weary. And there’s a big difference. Tired needs sleep. Weary needs a Savior.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” That’s the invitation we keep ignoring because culture tells us we have to earn peace — through hustle, through strategy, through doing more. But rest isn’t earned. It’s received. And it starts with one simple whisper: “God, I’m open.”

Jen isn’t here to cancel self-help. She’s here to complete it. Routines, healthy habits, journaling — all of these can be great tools. But they’re not the answer. They’re not your fuel. God is.

So if you’re sitting in the metaphorical driveway with the most well-decorated life — but you're still not moving — ask yourself: Did I forget to add the fuel?

The truth is simple: you don’t need a makeover. You need a moment with your Maker.
