Never Forget: The 9/11 Lesson About Love We’re Still Missing

Sep 11, 2025

“Never forget.”

Those two words echo every year on September 11. But have we really remembered? Or have we forgotten the most important part of that day — the way we loved?

On 9/11, something happened that shook more than buildings. It shook us awake. For a brief, raw moment, the noise of the world stopped. Pride, politics, and preferences faded. Strangers checked on each other. Neighbors became family. Firefighters ran toward danger instead of away from it. People lined up for hours to give blood for people they didn’t know.

That wasn’t transactional love. That wasn’t “be nice to those who are nice to you.” That was something deeper — God’s kind of love breaking through.

Worldly Love vs. Godly Love

The world teaches us to love conditionally: respect those who respect you, love those who love you, “let them” if they don’t. That’s easy. But on 9/11, we didn’t love easy. We loved unconditionally. We saw each other through the eyes of God.

Luke 6:32 says, “If you love those who love you, what good is that? Even sinners love those who love them.” On that day, we lived beyond worldly love. We tapped into the original blueprint — sacrificial, unconditional love.

And it changed everything. That’s why those days felt so powerful. That’s why we still remember how connected we felt.

The Heartbreak of Forgetting

But here’s the tragedy: we only seem to reach for that kind of love in catastrophe. As the days passed, the noise came back — division, fear, distraction. We went back to small love. Back to scrolling past people instead of seeing them. Back to protecting ourselves instead of serving others.

And we wonder why the world feels heavier.

Imagine If…

What if we didn’t need disaster to remember? What if we chose God’s love every single day? Families would heal. Communities would strengthen. Our lives would feel lighter, richer, freer. Because that kind of love isn’t weakness. It’s power.

It’s as simple as sitting with the lonely man in the coffee shop. Asking a stranger how they’re really doing. Choosing compassion when it would be easier to ignore. That’s living launched.

Never Forget — The Right Way

So this year, when you hear “never forget,” don’t just remember the tragedy. Remember the love. Don’t just recall the pain. Recall the power of what happens when we live the way God wired us to live.

Because that kind of love doesn’t just honor the past. It shapes the future. It’s the blueprint to peace, joy, purpose, and abundance.

To those who lost loved ones that day — may you feel the hope of reunion in God’s presence. And may we all choose to live in a way that makes “never forget” more than a slogan.

Let’s love different. Not just in catastrophe, but every day.
